Vintage Crochet Baby Socks Pattern

Sunday, 15. November 2009 17:06

These crochet baby socks are from a vintage pattern book published by Woolco in 1916. Sometimes vintage patterns are the best because they didn’t have all of the stuff that is ready made now so the patterns are more functional and just fit perfectly. This crochet baby sock pattern is a fine example. They work up very quickly and are so cute. Make them a little longer if you like and they will look like a combo of sock and legwarmers.

Priscilla – Lace Baby Leg Warmers Pattern

Priscilla Baby Leg Warmers

Priscilla Baby Leg Warmers

Although baby leg warmers seem to be the fashion craze for babies, I noticed there is a real lack of pretty and unique baby legwarmer patterns out there. This is a pattern I designed for the little girl who likes pretty things. This pattern can be adapted to any size, even adult.

I used Patons Stretch Socks yarn in this pattern because I think the legwarmers would be more form fitting in this material but you could use any sock weight yarn. You could even use heavier weight yarn if you adjusted the amount of stitches on your needles.

I chose to knit these on two needles rather than double point because I know that many new knitters have not mastered using DP yet and this is a very easy lace pattern that would be a great starter for the new knitter who wants to try very easy lace knitting.

Sizes:
0-6 months (9-12 months) (24 months)

Materials:
Patons Stretch Socks (50g) 2 balls
Tapestry needle.
3.25mm (US 3) knitting needles
3.75mm (US 5) knitting needles

Satin Ribbon

Gauge:
28 sts and 36 rows = 10 cm or 4″ in stocking stitch

Instructions:
With larger needles,(using simple cast on to preserve stretch) cast on 38 (44, 50) sts.
Work 3/4 inch in stocking stitch (k 1 row, p 1 row).
Picot Hem Row: K1, *yarn forward, k2tg. Repeat from * to last st. K1.
Work 1 inch stocking stitch with right side facing for next row.

Eyelet Row: K1, *yarn forward, k2tg, k1. Repeat from* to last st. K1.
Work 3 more rows stocking stitch.

Lace Pattern:
Row 1: K1, *yarn forward, k2tg. Repeat from * to last st. K1.
Row 2: Purl
Row 3: K2, *yarn forward, k2tg. Repeat from * across row.
Row 4: Purl
Repeat these 4 rows for pattern.

Work in pattern for 3(4,5) inches ending with row 4 of pattern and right side facing for next row. (you can custom fit this by measuring baby’s leg. This should end just below the knee cap)
Next row: Knit across increasing 1 st at beginning and end of row.
Work in stocking stitch for 1(2,3) inch (for custom fit this should be the length of the knee cap) Inc 1 st at beg and end of last row.(42,48,54 sts)

Work lace pattern for 3(4,5) inches ending with row 4 and right side facing for next row.(for custom fit, this should be 2″ below the finished length.)
Work 2 rows of stocking stitch.
Work 1 1/2″ to 2″ of k1, p1 rib stitch.
Cast off in rib stitch leaving a long enough tail to sew seam and hem.

Finishing:
Sew back seam with whip stitch.
Turn hem at picot row and loosely sew hem to preserve stretch.
Thread ribbon through eyelets and tie in pretty bow either at the front or the side.
