How to choose the perfect name for your baby

Most expectant mothers spend hours agonizing over choosing the perfect baby name for their baby. You want your baby’s name to be unique but do not go overboard with creativity. While you may choose a name that no one else has, but think of how your child will feel about the name as a youngster or as an adult.

  • Avoid naming your baby after places or objects. Your little girl may be the apple of your eye but naming her Apple will surely cause her embarrassment as she grows up and attends school.
  • Being trendy may also mean that your child has the same name as 5 other children in their class. Try not to name your child after the hottest movie star or musician as many others will also be doing the same.
  • If you scan the birth announcements regularly you will see a trend for certain names in your region.
  • Classic names will likely be your best bet. They rarely go out of style yet are not trendy enough to be over-used.
  • Be aware of your child’s initials too. If you know you want your baby’s middle name to be Adam and your last name is Davis, you may not want to give him the first name of Marcus as his initials would be MAD.
  • One trick I used when choosing names for my children was to pick up a baby name book. I gave it to my husband to go through and circle the names he liked. I then went through his selections and crossed out the ones that I did not like. That left us with a list of about 5 or 6 names to work with. It is easier to choose the perfect name when you have the field narrowed down.
I also found a very cool tool online called the Baby Name Voyager that showed the trend and history for names. You just type in a name and it will show the history of popularity of the name. You will instantly see if it is too popular to be considered a classic name. You can find the Baby Name Voyager here.
